Opera CARMEN by G. Bizet im Biberach

The opera “Carmen” by Georges Bizet enjoys an unprecedented popularity for almost 150 years. Its rousing melodies – habanera, Torero’s song, heartfelt lyrical episodes (Jose’s aria with flower and others) are as popular in the musical community, as the most popular folk and vaudeville songs.

The plot of the opera is based on the novella of the same name by the French writer Prosper Merimee. Experienced librettists Henri Meihac and Ludovic Halevi wrote an artful libretto, filling it with dramatic effects, intensifying the emotional contrasts, creating expressive images, in many aspects different from the literature prototypes. Bizet embodied the conception of the librettists with a fine sense of harmony, combining emotionality, ardour and strong aroma of the Spanish folklore – partly true, partly invented.

The tragedy takes place in the setting of the corrida, in the face of day, when there is nowhere to hide from death. Only one stroke of a sharp sword separates the heroine from freedom, which turns into tragedy.
This touching story of an innocent love broken between two completely different cultures has lost none of its relevance even in the present day.  The Opera of Ukraine can look back on a long tradition of high-quality productions, which we are now proud to present to you for the first time in Germany. Not only since the destruction of the domestic theatre in March 2022 as well as several obstacles to cultural life in Ukraine, the musicians as well as actors from theatres and philharmonies have been on the road with guest performances all over the world.
