Pianist and composer Mike Kaufmann-Portnikov has long been an internationally respected and sought-after figure among jazz musicians.
However, he has remained largely unknown to the general public. This is about to change abruptly. His piano recital programme ‘Unexpected Music’ combines irresistible refrains with romantic improvisations and is also his most personal work. This ‘collection of love songs that tell my story’ should not only delight jazz fans. From intimate jazzy ballads to finely honed R’n’B gems, elegant jazz-inspired modern soul and club-ready hip-hop jazz, there is a multifaceted range of moods that makes ‘Unexpected Music’ exciting from the first to the last track. Mike masters the art of subtle nuances like no other.
Kaufmann-Portnikov’s music is always very personal, it always tells his story. ‘In this case, I have processed my experiences of the last few years. The songs reflect memories, thoughts and feelings about these events’. Mike takes us on a journey. ‘Imagine you’ve lived in the same city for thirty years and suddenly you move. A lot has accumulated. When you tidy up, you come across this box containing your memories and your life. You wonder, open it and find: old love letters, photos, postcards, negatives, you name it.

The jazz arrangements include music by Gershwin, Petterson and Mike’s own compositions from his album ‘Tenderness’ to renew your feelings for your loved ones and appreciate the people around you again.
The best Christmas present for your loved one.

Mike Kaufmann-Portnikov is a virtuoso pianist, composer, and filmmaker hailing from a family of musicians, filmmakers, and inventors. He debuted on the piano at the age of 4. Musical legends such as Mozart, Art Tatum, George Gershwin, Oscar Peterson, and Vladimir Horowitz became his virtual mentors. Throughout his career, Mike has collaborated with renowned stars from both the European and American scenes, including performances with the Klezmatics (USA), the Glenn Miller USAF Orchestra, and participation in the iconic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical “Cats.”

For the last five years, Mike has been closely working with the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, further solidifying his place in the global music scene. European press has dubbed him the “king of improvisation” and the “sorcerer of notes,” highly appreciating his ability to enchant audiences with both his spontaneity and mastery. Once, the mayor of Edinburgh chose to attend one of Mike’s concerts instead of a football match, which speaks to the magnetic pull of his music.

Mike’s performances are a masterful blend of emotions, ranging from fiery expression to delicate tenderness. His music does not just reach the ears; it touches the soul. How does he achieve this? It’s simple: in his hands, the piano becomes as powerful and enchanting as Harry Potter’s magic wand.
