Great Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie
13.12.23 at 8.00 pm

December 13, 2023, 20:00 UTC+0

“Cinema has helped to create a masculine image of war: Men go into battle, men die at the front. But war has no gender. Women fight too. They take care of their families. They collect money and resist” – Julia von Heinz, director.Since 24 February 2022, Ukrainian women have turned their everyday lives into an act of resistance against barbarism, but above all against annihilation. Female doctors, nurses, journalists, soldiers, artists, lawyers, influencers, politicians, teachers, and students are fighting for their right to exist.
Today, these women have a message to the free world, to those who engage with them to ensure their survival. “Sound of Ukraine. To the Free World” is a message of hope; a message of love so that we can converse in the universal language of music.
Violinist Bohdana Pivenko (UA), author Aurélie Bros (DE), actress Mala Emde (DE) will be on stage to tell you about this suffering people and these brave women, each in her own way. With LVIV NATIONAL PHILHARMONIC SYMPHONIE ORCHESTRA under the baton of conductor Thedore Kuchar (USA):

“We must share the music from Ukraine with the world.”

Violinist Bohdana Pivnenko:
“This concert is very important for me. Every artist dreams of playing in the Berlin Philharmonic, and of course, especially during the war, it’s very important for Ukraine to be heard in Germany.”

General director and artistic director of the Lviv National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra,
Volodymyr Syvohyp:

“We present Ukraine. That is why No. 9 “From the New World” is so close to us, because Ukraine is this new world, and we declare ourselves to the world as such. A country that is born, a country that fights, a country that wins.”

Actress Mala Emde:
“It is a great honor for me to lend my voice to Ukrainian women on this evening. The war in Ukraine has shaken the world and me since it broke out. But as in all wars in history, the voices of the men you hear talking about it are always in the foreground. Giving greater attention to Ukrainian women is not only a matter of the heart for me, but the path to a solution.”

Producer of the concert and head of the concert agency OPEN MUSIC PROJECT, Iryna Frenkel:
“We have learned to live between the air raids. Under such conditions, we have learned to create new art projects that inspire the world and bring people together. “SOUND of UKRAINE” aims to bring people together through the universal language of music so that the world doesn’t forget that this war is first and foremost a conflict between civilizations.”

Editor of the book “Like a Ray of Light in the Darkness: Letters from Women of Ukraine to the Free World” Aurélie Bros:
“The West has unfortunately begun to get used to the horror images that reach us from Ukraine. Raped women. Children’s corpses in coffins. Mutilated soldiers. Destroyed buildings. Ukraine never needed us so much. This concert is an opportunity for me to show the Berlin audience what Ukraine is and what its artists are capable of. To sing about life despite the ongoing horror. To reach out to those who are willing to listen.”

Moderator and film producer, Fabian Gasmia:
“It is a great honor to welcome one of the best orchestras in Europe, the great violinist Bohdana Pivnenko and the great singer Jerry Heil to the Philharmonie Berlin. It is incredibly important to keep Ukraine and its honorable struggle for a free world in our thoughts, and I am sure the evening will do its part.”

Elisabeth Sandmann and Anne Stukenborg from the Elisabeth Sandmann Verlag:
“We at Elisabeth Sandmann Verlag are committed to the women in Ukraine, because women often remain invisible in war, yet they are the ones who organize everyday life and take care of children and the elderly. Our book “Like a ray of light in the darkness” by Aurélie Bros tells of their lives and survival. 38 women of different ages and backgrounds have shared their personal experiences in a moving way. Their stories, accompanied by striking photographs by three Ukrainian women, convey the brutal reality, the pain, the grief, the anger, but equally the strength and courage of the women on the ground and in exile. “
